OUT 111

Whattup peoples! This is your blogger of the STL-world, Ma’atology and it looks like ‘dem Dems have taken over the Congress according to poll results in the midterm Elections this year.

The STL yet again was in the national spotlight this week (following the Cards World Series win and the STL being the most dangerous city claim) as all eyez were on the belt weather Missouri state with the US Senator race between Repub Incumbent Jim Talent was dethroned by State Auditor Claire McCaskill (CANDIDATES SEEN ABOVE) . It was so that media all the way from London was here to cover this heated contest! (THAT’S BLOODY GOOD I MAY SAY)

Democrat Claire McCaskill defeated incumbent Sen. Jim Talent in one of the nation's most closely contested races, a campaign that focused on McCaskill's support for a stem-cell research referendum. Democrat Claire McCaskill nudged past Republican Senator Jim Talent with 50 percent of the vote, to Talent's 47 percent. This was definitely a nail biter cause, early reports had Talent leading, most of the time after the polls closed at 7 p.m., However, during the 1AM hour, votes from the urban areas in the STL started coming in and had McCaskill trotting over Talent. It was a mighty change in the candidates camps (Talent was at the County’s Plaza frotenac and Mccaskill was more in the “hood” downtown at the Renaissance Grand). It was definitely dramatic (people in Talents; camp even started crying because he lost. Now that is too much playing.)

The other national spotlighted issue was the stem cell research bill as it was slightly voted YES on a 51%-49% split. . Spending on the stem cell proposal and Senate contest each easily topped $30 million. A McCaskill stem cell research ad featuring actor Michael J. Fox — swaying noticeably from the effects of Parkinson's disease — drew nationwide attention and the skepticism of conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh who did a poor imitation of Fox in a spoof of the Fox ad.

Locally (more regionally), for the second time in four years, Missourians were showing their distaste Tuesday for a tobacco tax increase. Though urban and suburban voters were favoring it, the margins appeared to be inadequate to offset big losses in rural areas. The plan, known as Amendment 3, would raise the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 80 cents and triple the tax on other tobacco products. The money generated — an estimated $351 million — would be constitutionally set aside for antismoking and health care programs.

In other words, no smoking going on in the M.O.

On the ILL side voters handed Rod Blagojevich a second term as their governor Tuesday, responding to what supporters say is one of the most socially progressive records in the United States — or to what critics say was one of the dirtiest smear campaigns in the state's history (DID Y’ALL SEE THE WHAT WAS SHE THINKING ADS?BRUTAL.) With a majority of the state's precincts reporting, it appeared that Blagojevich, a Democrat, easily held off the challenge from Republican state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, despite the shadow of a federal corruption inquiry hanging over his administration.

Also, Prop. B will increase Missouri's minimum wage from the current federal base of $5.15 an hour to $6.50 an hour effective Jan. 1, with an automatic increase each year to keep pace with inflation passed with flying colors with over 70 percent voting for it.
This was a no-brainer that this was gonna pass like urination to beer consumption.
Overall, voter turnout in the MO was over 1 million which was quite impressive.

Here is a breakdown of the important races affecting the bi-state region:

US SENATE (MO)
X Claire McCaskill (D) 1,027,670 50%
Jim Talent (R) X 985,701 47%

Therre were no major reports of foul play when it came to the electronic voting machines. I guess the voting companies got a real close look at the HBO documentary, “Hacking Democracy” that is airing this month as it talked about the faulty claims of the electronic voting process with voting company, Diebold and how the 2000 and 2004 were fixed, and poll workers grandfathering certain poor and urban areas voters. If you havent seen this documentary, this is a must see. Catch it when you can!

In National NEWZ:
The battle for the Senate hung on a few thousand cliffhanger votes in two states Wednesday, long after polls closed in an election that swept Democrats into power in the House and delivered a rebuke of GOP scandal, the Iraq war and the course of a nation. US SENATE (50 seats). The Dems gained six seats and the GOP lost six seats, gaining the majority (After a too close to call vote in states Montana and Virginia) US HOUSE OF REPS (435 seats); 228 Dems and 195 GOPS. The Republicans lost 27 seats and Dems gained 28 seats; 218 seats were needed for the majority. This is the first time in 12 years that the Dems have captured the whole US Congress seats.

CAN ANYONE SAY DEM GRIDLOCK?

Then a “planned” bomb hit when Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, resigned after six stormy years as Secretary of Defense, replaced by ex CIA agent Robert Gates. I found it interesting that the whole resignation was planned right after the Dems majority win. CAN WE SAY WAG THE DOG?

The other bomb shell was when pop singer Brittany Spears filed for divorce from Kevin “K-Fed” Federline and was seen skating at Rockefeller Center on election day (I guess we know where her priorities were when it comes to voting) ! Her divorce petition cited irreconcilable differences with husband Kevin Federline and came just two months after the birth of their second child. The date of the separation after two years of marriage was given as Monday.

In International newz:
Suddam Hussein was sentenced to death this week and two co-defendants have been found guilty of murder and crimes against humanity, and sentenced to death by hanging over the 1982 killings of 148 people in theIraqi town of Dujail. The death sentences for Hussein, his half brother and a senior official in his regime marked the end to a trial that began more than a year ago. The trial cost the lives of three defense lawyers and was set back by the replacement of the main judge, among other interruptions.

THAT’S TOO GANGSTA!

Reports say “It was tense in the courtroom as the eight defendants faced their verdicts. Saddam at first, refused to stand up." Despite the verdict, the saga of Saddam Hussein is not yet over. He has the right to have the case reviewed by automatic appeal, a process that could take many months.

CAN SOMEONE SAY OJ?

On a somber note, Award-winning 60 Minutes journalist Ed Bradley died on Thursday with his battle with Leukemia. He was 65. He will be missed and definitely cannot be replaced.

Now with what I did. I was on an event tour this week as I did five events in five separate days (from Thursday to Monday). SO let’s get to the out town biz:

On Thursday, I peeped out the annual Best of the Riverfront Times Poll party at the Lucas School House in Soulard (PIC OF THE LIGHTED SIGN IS ABOVE) . It was an event featuring the winners in the RFT’s Poll a month ago put on by Cherrese Ink. I got therre about 7ish and was able to get a parking spot near the venue (I was expecting a huge turnout if last years 2,000 plus patrons were any indication at the Moolah Lounge). So I called up my guests (Christiaan, Joel King and Phil Crawford) to see wherr were their whereabouts so we can meet and get in with no problem son my RSVP invite.

As I was walking to the area, therre were this circle of drummers libating the night (I wonder of they were winners of something for them to be performing?). Anyway, I saw Christiaan and was now waiting on Phil and Joel. As we were waiting in the chill, I saw the Posts' Kevin Johnson who already had a plate of grub. As we chatted, Phil came up with his camera saying that he already got me covered as far as pics (this will come in handy later on in my story). Therre were also some white ladies in white hot pants, roller skates, angel wings and halos blowing bubbles near the red carpet area of the venue.

So about 10 minutes later, Joel walks up and we were ready to RSVP. The check in people saw my name and I got my guests in with no problem. Each one of us got three tickets so we can get our drink on (I will get to that as well) . The next step was finding wherre to go to get the free grub. Therre was a huge white tent that was next to the Lucas House wherre everybody was to get their free grub samples and drinks.

It was now close to 8 p.m. and the spot was already packed with people (I would say at least 500 or so). So when I went inside the tent (which was warmed up with generated heat), the first person I recognized was my former Flipside writer colleague WV Davis who was one of the RFT Crew Team (He also gave me a Mix Tape CD, The Midwest, for me to feature on my blog).

On the 1s and 2s were Stan the Man and Charlie Chan (I thought there were supposed to be three DJs, but who’s counting). It was very hard to walk around up in the tent as people stopped and look’d at the winners booths from honey herbs, Korean food, pizza, trinkets and the works. But the popular booth was definitely the drink booth sponsored by winner Finlanda Liquor. They had vodka, martinis and err’ thing in between.

But before I got into the drinks, I walk’d around seeing who was therre as I took shots of people who I knew and my now famous aerial shots (I will get to that later). While I was walking through the crowd, they had two go-go girls on two small stages dancing to the beat (them white girls had rhythm!).

For about an hour, I hobnobbed with the crowd (even got into an air guitar dual with a white guy when Def Leppard's classsic rock jam, "Pour Some Sugar on me" was blasting on the amps). So, Phil and I decided to walk to Lucas School House (I thought it was a school myself. LOl). As I was walking, my eyes hit the light of the huge spotlight and I got strobe light fever for a second.! When I came back to light, we walked up the steps to the House. It was a nice bar area with lots of rectangular sofa chairs for people to chat. The highlight were the two shadow go-go dancers that were projected on a huge screen, gyrating and you could see from their silhouettes well...let me just say, you can tell leave It to beaver was still showing on screen. LOL

Now herre’s the trip part of the night. Now, I am standing in line at the School House waiting to turn in my tix for my drinks. Now, problem one was they only had one bartender tending on 100s of people. So it was like the turtle and many rabbits waiting for their drinks. Then they had some foo-foo samples that Joel was trying to get and when I asked what the concoction was, Joel told me it was foo-foo and she was charging 2 dollars (and not free wit a tip? IT’s a SAMPLE). So I said no go on that.

Then, come to find out, as I waited for 10 minutes, we could only use the drink tix at the tent. This meant those who thought they could use their tix at the Lucas House bar were waiting for nothing. No Sign or anything to direct people where they need to go.

TAC---KY.

So I walked back to the tent to get in line to get my drinks. But the second problem was about to abrupt. It was only one drinking booth (Last year they had at least two at the Moolah Lounge and Theater). Then, the line was as long as a country mile. SO, I waited for about 20 minutes as the line moved slowly. Just when it was about to be my turn to get my drinks, local socialite (and ST. Louis’ dubbed pretty boi) Robert Kirk and his sway back Frankenstein looking friend saw a young lady that they knew that was in front of me and flirted with her in order to JIP the line.
I look’d at this shyt and was about to go off. But I remained cool. So after she got her drink, Kirk shouted out which drinks to get for him and his quasi moto friend and they left as though they didn’t do anything. Aint this a bitch! Only US would do some shyt like this. In the meantime, I got my vodka and cran and the special FInlanda cocktail and got to where Christiaan and Joel were (what was up with our impromptu macho vogue routine? LOL) and chilled out.

It was now close to 10 and the crowd was thinning out (It was ending at this time) and I look’d at my celly and saw that Kevin J. had bounced at 9 p.m. (I’ll get to why later) . But the party couldn’t stop as Charlie Chan began playing the greatest hits of Run DMC. It was too much playing. But just with anything, the show had to end. But before I left out, I asked , Christiaan, “Is it me or is there not a lot of black people here?” He agreed and come to find out most of the black people, including Kevin J, were at Nelly’s private party at the new Mandarin Club (where his main squeeze Ashanti also attended) in The Central West End.

In the house were architect Anthony Robinson, SYGU Group’s Eddie Holman, fashion show coordinator Nia, My46TV “Enterate” talk show host Gilberto Pinella, Pinnacle’s Crystal Allen, Eye Candy coordinator Mo Spoon and Maranda Witherspoon, body paint specialist Jessica Dana, and model Lynette Daniels.

On Friday, I checked out Stress Free Fridays which was held at Pepper Lounge. I got therre about 7ish and saw my boy Kameron who was giving out messages, his weekly gig for SFF. I greeted him and asked how the masseur biz was going as I walk’d through the crowd. It was cool and the beer was FREE, so you know I took advantage of that. But other than that, I was hoping Kameron’s lady, Dawna had some good news about putting us on the RSVP for STL Rams’ Orlando Pace’s party at the Mandarin later that evening. When she came through, she told Kameron that the list was full (But you know that wouldn’t have stopped me. LOL) So, I decided to stay at Stress Free and take some pics (which I will talk about later in my story) .
In the house were Stress Free creator Mario Wayne, Guy Dunn (wherr you been hidin?) and Tischaura Jones,
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On Saturday, I checked out two events—the SYGU group’s networking event at the new club Mercury on Spruce and Big Tah’s B-Day party at the Main Ingredient. I decided to check out Mercury first. I got there about 10 and met up with the SYgu team (including Darryl Gillespie and Big Joe). DJ Nappy Needles was on the 1s and 2s. It wasn’t too people in there, but I got there early to take advantage of the 5 bones admission for brothas b4 10:30. I talked with Darryl for a minute about their concept and ideas with Sygu as Big Joe took my pic as one of the VIPs up in there. Then I walked over to Needles and talked with him briefly about the fashion show he did at Anthony Robinson’s house a week ago. I also found interesting was before I talked with him he was talking with this white couple, and the female was Pregnant (as in about to drop pregnant and she was drinking a beer! What’s was going on there.

Anyway, let me preface that before I got to Mercury, I had two CAMO beers before I got there so I was ready to be mellow. So as I walked dup the stairs and took some shots of the area, my finger accidentally dumped the all the pics I took at the Riverfront Times party and the Stress free Friday event! I was hoping was just hallucinating and I didn’t do it, but I did. I tried to see if it was a retrieval command on my camera to get them back, but I was SOL.
I didn’t trip too hard cause I knew Phil (AKA Robin) was my backup for my RFT pics, but as far a the other pics, I was just out of luck. So I started over and took pics of the atmosphere and people at Mercury. I stayed for about an hour, gave some dap to Darryl; and drove over to the South Side to Big Tah’s b-day party at the Main Ingredient.

I got there about 11ish as I tried to find somewhere to park near the club. When I got my parking space, I didn’t know what to expect as far as the clientele. So when I walked up, one of the security guards, this white lady asked me was I with the media (I had my camera bag on my shoulder) and I told her yeah and gave her the rundown of who I take shots for and walked over to this other security guy who patt'd me down.

I walked in the club and it was as thought I step'd into the Monetary in the East Boogie but with an over 25 crowd. It was straight up Hole in the Wall. I suddenly felt like I needed to grab my wallet and put in my front pocket, but I was so buzzed from my CaMo, that all I was looking for was the food. On the side I was at, they had the bar area where people sat and chilled out. I walked on the other side and there was the dance floor kitchen area. I saw that they had the usual party food (chicken, mostocolli and salad) and you know I was not complain cause I was about to get my grub on b-day or no b0day party. But before I got my plate, I asked someone where the utensils were and they told me I had to go to the kitchen to get them.

So I went upstairs top the kitchen to get my plastic wear and plate and proceeded back downstairs to the grub and packed it on. After I ate, I was ready to take some snaps of the b-day boy, Big Tah. When I saw him I asked what kind of shots did he want me to take, and he told me that he wanted a shot of him and his guests, mainly Sharee Galvin and his friend Nicky (SEEN IN THE PIC ABOVE).

After that, it started to get interesting.

There was this big bone sista on the dance floor getting her groove on (I got a pic of her on OUT 108). She had big Chaka Khan hair and this very high blue dress on that if she did the famous Marilyn Monroe air blow up dress scene, you would have saw her cookies. Well, home girl saw this brotha who wanted to dance with her (to put it lightly) and before you know it, she was giving the crowd a PG-13 Pink Slip show as she danced and did her best Beyonce moves. Then, the unbelievable happened. She fell flat in the dance floor. Everyone GASPED. She stayed therr for a minute probably in shock and the brotha helped her up and before you know it, her ENTIRE COOKIES were exposed! I was so embarrassed for her, but she got up and her and her new one-night man walked off the dance floor.

CLASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSIC!!!!!!!

After that, I knew it was time to go cause for one, I didn’t too much care for the crowd which was like a video shoot to a 50 cent video. I stayed for about an hour and left out around midnite to get to my BOOTI CALL ON. LOL.

FOR PICS OF THE BIG TAH AND MERCURY EVENTS GO TO OUT 108.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
On Sunday, I was invited to St. Louis Post’s Kevin Johnson’s (SEEN IN PIC ABOVE) housewarming at his crib in South St. Louis. I got the invite via text a few days back and told him I would come. I asked if I could take my camera cause I wasn’t for sure, and he said that he was cool (he was also nervous of what I might write in this blog, too but I told him I was gentle. LOL)

So, I got there about 4 or so, and I was greeted by Kevin and his colleague Cynthia Todd. From what I already saw, I pretty much expect’d his house to be what is was going to be—an artsy pad with a touch of music nostalgia. Kevin introduced me to those who were already there (about 20 or so) as I proceeded to get a glass of wine. I schmoozed with those who were there and then it was the tour of the crib by tour guide KJ.

I was very impressed at what I saw. He has great taste as each room had some sense of art and coziness to each room. He has two-and-a half bathrooms, two bedrooms, a sitting room, kitchen, laundry room, dining room, an office and a living room ( Is that 10 rooms?) I counted countless African artifacts on the walls and on counters, album covers on the walls, two huge CD collections (close to 5,000), marble carvings, fireplaces, high ceilings, a walk in closet, and huge bathrooms and kitchen space. It was definitely lot of oohs and ahhhs from those who took the tour of his upstairs-downstairs mini-villa.

I counted well over 100 guests who ate, talked, drinked and debated at his house (some brought housewarming gifts and wine) and enjoyed each others company. I met most of the VIPs of the STL up in there too –it was definitely a Hollywood Hills type party, just with STLwood people including actors, singers, event planners, media people, friends, lovers and “haters.” LOL I stayed till about 7:30 and did my goodbye greeting to everybody and headed to the J.O.B.

In the house (literally) Randal Beans, Deneen Busby, Afua Bromley, Monica Tyson, Nicci Roach, Vanita Applebum, Christiaan Coffield, Prof. Laurencin Dunbar, Steve Lacy, Arrika Parr , Jeff Small, Chuck Flowers, J Samuel Davis, Cheryl DS Smith, Dr. Pam Jackson, Gail Pennington, Cynthia Todd, Debra Bass, Ms. Galore,. Nichol Stevenson, X-Jam (what was up with eth Malcolm X/Black Panthers outfit?), and Jamie Spencer.

FOR PICS OF KEVIN”S HOUSEWARMING, GO TO OUT 109
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On Monday I checked out the 3rd Annual Black Who’s Who Event held at the Ritz Carlton. I started not to go to this event especially after the whole debacle of the writers (including myslef0 of the commemorative Whos Who book were getting delayed with the pay, but with coaxing from Who’s Who Writer coordinator Renee Thomas Woods, I decided to go.

So I called up my girl Jewelanda Hodges and asked if she wanted to go to the “show” and she said that she was down. We got there about 6:30 p.m. as the VIP reception was going on and the back-in0Motown group Focus was performing fro eth crowd. I got to the desk where the RSVP list people were and gave them my ID. They checked the list and I wasn’t on the list. I told them I was one of the writers and that we were promised two comps to this event.

As this drama was going on, Jewelanda decided to walk on into the lobby area and let me handle this situation. So one of the ladies walked off to ask someone about the comp situation. The other lady had that “I’m sorry “look on her face as I look'd around the people looking at me wondering what was going on.

So about 5 minutes later, the lady had said it was cool for me to get two comps, then I told her I was also supposed to get two comps tickets for the book, but the other lady said , I was to get only ONE. I didn’t question it, but I knew that Renee had said we were promised two, but I have had too much h drama already and was this close to leaving. As we walked around and said hi to those we knew, WESL personality The Real JR (who was wearing a red sequined Las Vegas suit coat) was instructing people that it was time to go inside for the festivities.

As we got our seats, the young St. Louis group Project X (which consisted of a young lady and two male twins) was entertaining the crowd as people go their seats. The rest of the show was definitely that-…a show. Various speakers came up to the podium to talk about Who’s who from Ritz Carlton manager Reggie Dominique, to Cheryl Polk who did the books foreword, to Who's Who of America founder C Sunny Martin , Charlotte Ottly, exec to the Katherine Dunham Museum estate, etc and a cute performance by Project X of some 50s doo-wop and the young girl serenading Who's Who recipient Hubert Hoosman of Vantage Credit Union.

Meanwhile, I decided to go to the lobby to get some drinks and ran into my former boss at the ST. Louis American, Dr. Donald Suggs and his daughter, Dina (who was in town for the America’s Salute to excellence in Business Luncheon), I didn’t se him but he yelled, out, “You’re not going to speak Young man?” I felt like I was deer trapped in the headlights. I turned around, saw him and shook his hand. Then he scoped me from head to toe and told me I was sharp, and then Dina walked up and greeted me and said it was nice to see me. She then asked if I was coming to their luncheon and like a babbling fool all I could muster was, ‘I guess so.” After that uncomfortable moment, I ordered two wine glasses of Chardonnay (which was 8 bucks a piece by the way) and walked back into the main room.

The event was definitely self congratulatory and I was ready to go until they had the tribute to Katherine Dunham which was led by East Boogie's Sylvester Sunshine Lee and his ensemble with young girls dancing. They definitely emoted the sprit of Miss Dunham (whose daughter also was in attendance BTW) as they did the Dunham technique as the drummers drummed the spirit of Dunham as picture highlights of the late dancer/choreographer were shown on the big screen.

Then, they had the unveiling of the book cover (SEEN IN PIC ABOVE) as the photographers (including myself) took pics of it (thanks for the chewing gum-with a camera ratio lesson Miss Lois Ingrum.LOL)

After about an hour of all this, it was picture time. So I took pics of the winners and the crowd as I was trying to find Renee to see if the check was to be given to her for our pay. But I couldn’t wait and decided to bounce up all of this loveliness. But if you wanted to purchase the 3rd edition of Who's Who In Black St. Louis, call (614) 481-7300 or order online at

Also in the house were Rev,. Sammie Jones, Rosiland Jones, Ruth Starr, Theo Jamison, Rep. Betty Thompson, Lorna Godwin, Rev. earl Nance Jr., Donn Johnson, Eddie Hassan, Jacque Land, James Clark, Jim Buford and Anthony Bonner.

CHART-TIDBITZ. Just wanted to give ya’ll the skinny of what’s been going on with the STL representation on the Billboard charts. Well, Jibbs and Chingy still have a presence on several charts with their songs, “Chain Hang Low” (Currently at #24 on Hot 100 peaking at No. 8; # 48 on the R&B chart peaking at No. 16 and has dropped out of the Top 10 on the Rap Chart peaking at No. 6)and the former No. 1 R&B and Rap hit “Pulling Me Back”(which has now fell out of the Top 50 on the Hot 100, at #17 on the R&B chart, and #5on the Rap Chart) ). Therre’s No signs of Chingy’s new song, “Dem Jeans” hitting either charts as of yet. Jibbs’ CD, “Jibbs feat Jibbs” is doing OK. It peaked at #8 on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B chart (2 weeks out with no sign of gold or platinum status) and Chingy’s Hood Star” although it went GOLD, seems as though it is slowing down. Seven weeks out, it peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200, # 3 on the R&B chart and #2 on the Rap Chart. Nelly and Janet’s former No.1 R&B hit, interestingly enuff is still got legs, is at No. 26 on the R&B chart with a sales gainer bullet.

Following the 2004 Missouri Democratic primary to replace retiring 28- year veteran and former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt the film is told from inside the campaign of Jeff Smith, a 29-year old part- time political science instructor at Washington University. An unvarnished look at the inside of what national pundits called one of 2004's surprising campaigns, the film asks if it is still possible in America for voters excited by a person's ideas and ability to get involved in the political process and elect a candidate who has not sold out, or bought into the existing political establishment. A panel discussion with Jeff Smith, director Frank Popper and others will follow the screening.

Admission is $6 for the general public, $5 for seniors, students from other schools and Webster alumni, and $4 for Webster University staff and faculty unless otherwise noted. All films screened in Moore Auditorium on the campus of Webster University, 470 E. Lockwood, Webster Groves, and MO unless noted.
