Wassup e-fans! For those who got power and are able to see this post, you are one of the lucky ones fo sho’. Last week’s ice storm in the St. Louis had done more damage than a perm too long on some roots. I am a soldier for y'all and you know I would do anything to get this post up weekly. I would even swallow poison like that KGB guy in Russia if I had to in order to post up this for you all--well, on second thought....LOL
But getting back to the ice--and not the kind thats jewelry. In the infamous words of Alpha Phi Alpha and brought back in cover from Vanilla Ice, we got some ICE ICE BABY.”
The meltdown is literally one for Ameren UE. According to stltoday, AmerenUE said last week's storm that left a thick coat of ice on trees, poles and power lines, prompting many to snap, is “unprecedented in its 100-year history. The utility made the same argument when back-to-back thunderstorms left almost a million people without electric service in the bistate area in July — some for as long as nine days.”
As reported, about 498,000 AmerenUE customers were in the dark as a thick glazing of ice from the winter’s first storm on Nov. 30 snapped tree limbs and power lines. Company officials warned it would take several days to restore the crippled system.
Company officials said about 285,000 customers in Missouri were in the dark, most of them in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The rest were in Illinois, where the hardest-hit areas were the Metro East and Decatur. (As of this writing, I hear that about 50,000 customers, especially in the Metro east are still without power as of this wring and wont get service back on probably until Dec. 15!)
The outages were reported along swath of nearly 300 miles that stretched from Missouri’s Arcadia Valley, about 90 miles south of St. Louis, to Peoria and Pontiac, Ill., nearly 200 miles to the north-northeast. That line was the eastern, warmer track of an overnight storm that dumped more than a foot of snow in some parts of central and northern Missouri.

That line was the eastern, warmer track of an overnight storm that dumped more than a foot of snow in some parts of central and northern Missouri.
The storm was the worst ever to hit the AmerenUE system, company officials said during a news conference today at their headquarters just south of St. Louis Union Station. And it struck less than six months after back-to-back severe thunderstorms knocked out power to 600,000 of the company’s customers. As many residents remained in the dark and cold, reportedly others moved into their offices, shunted between shelters and lingered in public spaces to find ways to cope.
Officials warned, including St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay at a press conference from City Hall, those trying to survive so many days in a home without heat. Two men were reportedly found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in St. Louis last Sunday morning. Another St. Louis man was found dead in his backyard, probably of hypothermia. And a fourth man, also from St. Louis, died after tumbling down the stairs of his home, possibly because he had difficulty seeing the steps with the power out. Altogether, at least eight deaths in the St. Louis area can now be attributed to the storm.
Temporary help from out of town crews had come from 14 states. Illinois National Guardsmen also reported for duty in East St. Louis to check door-to-door on residents. Across the river in St. Louis, Missouri National Guardsmen continued a similar effort.
The MetroLink had been crippled by ice on the wires that power the units. Street intersections were without traffic lights. As of this writing, the majority of the customers without power in the ST. Louis area were in the Florissant area and they were going to have power as of this writing.
When the storm hit, I was at work doing the late shift inside the water geyser facility near the Casino Queen and I could literally see the weather change from a mild 60 degrees, to howling winds a couple of hours later when the temperature dropped to the 40s, a hard rain followed, then sleet, then pellets of ice. Come after midnite on Dec.1, it was a winter wonderland. The lights in the facility blinked briefly but they never go out. Besides trying to get ice-laced protective tarp from my car, I managed to survive the storm (and I had lights at my house as well in Belleville).
I heard on Freeman Bosley Junior Show last Sunday with Ameren prez Richard Mark that people were complaining about why Ameren couldn’t cut the trees that caused most of the damage from falling on poles after the July 19 storms. And Mark said that Ameren do not own the trees in the city and county, that it’s the city and county’s; job to get that taken care of and that Ameren didn’t want to get involved with cutting trees because complaints of how they are cutting it would ensue as well.
I just say that we need SOLOR Powered generators and that would take care of everything!
In other local newz:
Nightclub violence in the STL has crossed over , sort of-- at all places, The Pepper Lounge. St. Louis Rams rookie tight end Dominique Byrd (SEEN IN PIC ABOVE) was charged early Monday with allegedly hitting a bar patron in the face with a drinking glass at Pepper Lounge in ST. Louis . Byrd, 22, was charged with second-and third-degree assault and armed criminal action. His bond was set at US$25,000, said chief warrant officer Jeannette Graviss with the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's office.
After Byrd allegedly grabbed the buttocks of a female patron, a 30-year-old man stepped up to Byrd to question his fondling. As a result, Byrd allegedly got a beer bottle and struck the man in the head. The bottle broke and the man was taken to a hospital and was treated for cuts to the face after allegedly being struck by Byrd, police spokeswoman Schron Jackson said. Byrd was cut on his right hand but declined treatment, she said.
I’m sure the spot was packed cause Pepper Lounge stays packed on late Sunday/early Monday. I’m just glad it wasn’t gunfire on anything deadly cause as small as that place ids, it would have been a horrible scene. If Byrd was dissin' someone’s lady, then any red blooded guy would have done the same thing. I guess Byrd was soaking his Rams loss by trying to grab a tight end. Too much playin in the city, for real.
IN other newz, locally, Belleville had another killing as a SWIC student, Amy Bracht, was found dead this week, her body slumped over the bathtub in her apartment near Belleville. According to stltoday.com, On Tuesday, a man from Belleville, Emmet Lindsey, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Bracht. Authorities did not offer a motive.
Lindsey, 27, was being held in the St. Clair County Jail, with bail set at $2.5 million He was arraigned Wednesday. Sheriff's Lt. Steve Johnson said at a news conference that another man, the victim's boyfriend, grew concerned because he couldn't reach Bracht on her cell phone and hadn't heard from her since late Nov. 28.
The next day, the boyfriend went to her apartment, in the 9000 block of Lebanon Road; the door was locked from the outside. The apartment manager let him in. The boyfriend found the body and called 911. Bracht's keys, cell phone and purse were missing.
Johnson said the victim lived alone. He said Lindsey was unemployed. Johnson said that the victim and suspect were acquainted through mutual friends and that the murder was not random. He said investigators had interviewed roughly 45 people who were associated with the victim to develop a suspect. He added that there was no evidence of a break-in.
This is just tragic. Just like mamma used to say, be careful who you hang with cause even your friends can snap.
This week, we lost yet another pillar in the ST. Louis international community when actor/opera singer Robert McFerrin (SEEN IN PIC ABOVE) died this week. He died Nov. 24, a day before Thanksgiving, at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in St. Louis after a heart attack. He had Alzheimer's disease. He was 85.
Here’s a little bio on McFerrin:
Baritone Robert McFerrin moved to St. Louis in 1936 and began classical voice training at Sumner High. He sang on Broadway and with the National Negro Opera Company, and in 1955 became the Metropolitan Opera's first African-American male soloist.
McFerrin provided the vocals for Sidney Poitier in the 1959 film classic "Porgy and Bess," and toured and taught internationally before returning to St. Louis in 1973. A severe stroke in 1989 impaired his verbal ability but not his voice, and he courageously resumed performances, including concerts with his Grammy-winning son, Bobby.
In 2003 Opera America honored Robert McFerrin, Sr. with a lifetime achievement award. McFerrin, a baritone, became the first black man to sing as a member of the New York Metropolitan Opera.
In California, and later in St. Louis, Mr. McFerrin continued to perform and also did some teaching. He recorded "Deep River, and Other Classic Negro Spirituals" (1959), a release now all but impossible to find.
Despite a stroke in 1989, he appeared on his son's 1990 album, "Medicine Music," and was a soloist with the St. Louis Symphony in 1993 with his son as guest conductor.
Bobby McFerrin told the Associated Press in 2003: "His work influenced everything I do musically. When I direct a choir, I go for his sound. . . . I cannot do anything without me hearing his voice."
His marriage to Sara Copper McFerrin ended in divorce.
In addition to his son, of Philadelphia, survivors include Mr. McFerrin's wife of 12 years, Athena Bush McFerrin of St. Louis; a second child from his first marriage, Brenda McFerrin of Anaheim, Calif.; a sister; and three grandchildren.
He received a St. Louis Walk of fame Award on May 16 2004. His star is located at 6300 Delmar.
Funeral services were held at LUPTON CHAPEL, 7233 Delmar Blvd., December 4, and was laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
In National newz:
Search crews deploying sophisticated technological tools worked frantically to rescue a freezing man in the snow-choked mountains of Oregon, only to be devastated Wednesday afternoon by the realization that they were too late.

A rescue crew reached the body of James Kim, 35, of San Francisco shortly after noon PT Wednesday in a drainage area of the Klamath Mountains two days after his wife and two daughters were rescued from their car, which had been stuck on a remote road for more than a week. Taco Bell had temporarily closed one of its fast-food outlets and was working with New Jersey health authorities seeking the cause of an outbreak of E. coli which has sickened nearly a dozen people. Taco Bell has removed green onions at all of its 5,800 restaurants nationwide following more than 60 cases of E. coli linked to restaurants in three states. Three samples of green onions were found to be ``presumptive'' positive for E. coli (I guess the stuff got people really runnin for the border!) …..
St Louis Blues star Brett Hull (SEEN IN PIC ABOVE) retired his jersey this week. Hull, joins his father, Bobby Hull, as an NHL legend, as he watched his No. 16 of his, climb to the rafters at Scot Trade Center. Not in the 89-year history of the NHL has a father and son each had his number retired. Brett Hull will become the sixth player in Blues history to receive that honor….

Researchers at the German Institute for Condom Consultancy plan to launch a spray-on condom – the Institute is currently conducting tests on a spray can into which the man inserts his penis which is then sprayed with latex from nozzles on all sides. The plan is to make the product ready for use in about five seconds and offer a more effective contraceptive that fits better than standard one-size fits all condoms and hence does not slip. The condom spray can is expected to reach market in 2008 for a price of around EUR 20 (US$27) and will offer around 20 applications (Can you picture a brotha telling his partner that he only got spray for a quickie?) .….
Other comedians and entertainers getting on the N-word Kramer bandwagon—Andy Dick was heckling comedian Ian Bagg at L.A.'s Improv comedy club Saturday, when he suddenly got out of his seat and jumped onstage, cracked jokes about Michael Richards, and referred to the crowd by the n-word the later apologized …Damon Wayans has temporarily been banned from setting foot inside the Laugh Factory again - well, at least as a performer. After the comedy club recently decided to ban use of the "n" word, he became the first offender to ignore it.
Since Michael Richards racist tirade, use of the "n" word at the LA hotspot has been strictly banned during a comedian's performance. Those who choose to ignore it will now be fined $20 for every offense The actor was making his appearance during a special show of African-American comedians when he dropped the word bomb. His act was titled "Chocolate Sundaes" and opened up with Damon asking the audience members to applaud themselves for "coming down and supporting n**** night."
That was all it took to make the star of the show suddenly out the door. His publicist has since confirmed that the comedian was banned for three months from the club and fined $320.

Oscar mominated actor Terrence Howard repostredly said that Richards was just "exercising [his] First Amendment [right]. We gain so much from comedians by giving them an uncensored sense of style and liberty." But rapper Jay-Z, who uses the word in his lyrics, disagreed with a formal ban, reportedly saying: "I'm against that, I'm all for freedom of speech." He added, "You have to fix the people that have hatred inside their soul."
My thing is this, the word, for one, is “nigger,”, not N-Word. And just like any word, if it is used in a context of hate, then whoever uses it should be accounted for saying it. The word is just that—a word, and, it is easy for someone to use it because all it takes is one saying it.
In international newz:. I hear that there were allegations that Al Queda was going to attack the stock trading and banking systems her in the States. The US government has warned American private financial services of an al Qaeda call for a cyber attack against online stock trading and banking websites, a source said. THIS JUST IN. Congrats to Nelly and Ali for getting nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Performance Duo or Group for their recording of "Grilliz" (with Gipp). They have some stiff comp though. They have to beat out "Ridin" by Chamillionaire Featuring Krayzie Bone; "Georgia" by Ludacris & Field Mob (Featuring Jamie Foxx), "Mighty "O" by Outkast and "Don't Feel Right" by The Roots. My bet, Chamilliionaire got this one. besides, Weird Al Yankovich paraoded his ong ("White and Nerdy") so go figure. Shockingly, Chingy didnt get any nods this year for his CD "Hood star" or his No. 1 hit, "Pulling Me Back " with Tyrese. Oh well.

CD SPOTLIGHT
A couple of weeks ago, local music producer James Glasco gave me a mix tape of 2004 American Idol finalist Aloha that he wanted me to check out. The title of the mix tape is “Ratt Pakk presents “GOOD MONEY” hosted by The Kid Capri and featuring Aloha.”
This 14 track Cd is, according to Glasco, “a platform to showcase Aloha’s writing skills.” From listening to the CD, I was hoping for more Aloha and less production heavy hitters. I give producers Hiroshima and Glasco (the Ratt Pakk) for doing something very creative by giving an R&B artist a mix tape debut (which is a first on many levels), however, my only problem was the world renowned dee-jay Kid Capri who does his innocuous intro calls ad nasuem throughout most of the tracks (It gets quite monotonous at times).
Other than that, Good Money is a solid blend of Aloha’s perky vocals blended with some of today’s phattest hip-hop beats (including Nas’ “One Mic”, 50 Cent’s “PIMP”, 36 Mafia’s “Stay Fly” and Ludacris’ “Number One Spot.”)
Some of the standout tracks include the midtempo jams, “One Chance,” “Baby” (which could easily be a hit single for Aloha). “I Can’t Help,” “ Songs Cry (which uses Jay Z’s Song Cry” sample quite creatively).
As far as the head bopping tracks, the standout is “Lucifer Be Gone: (which is reminiscent of Lil Kim’s “Lighters’ Up”) which samples the great King Tubby’s Lucifer.”
As far as her writing skills, one can tell she is influenced by Beyonce’s “diva girl” sass phrases. One song is a perfect example of this . On the song, “ Call Me” Aloha says, “I’m not trying to fall in love tonight/I just want to pull a couple and you’re my type (ala Destiny’s; Child’s “Jumpin Jumpin”) then vamps with the broadly funny line, “ Why you breathin so hard/are you scared I’m a take your man?
“No. 1 Spot”, a no-hold s barred manifesto on St. Louis talent, she coyishly talks about her stint on American Idol more like a manifesto on the show when she emotes, “took a minute….hungry for it/cant forget it/. I made some noise on a TV show/Too bad they didn’t count my votes, cause I’m about to explode…”
Overall, the mix tape does a good job featuring Aloha’s bubbly and spunky personality. I can’t wait until she finally does her CD, because she definitely needs to be the Next to come out of the STL.
