Herre are, in my opinion, The Top 10 Local Storiez of 2006

1. The Cardinals win the World Series

This was THE story hands down. The Cardinals won their first World Series in October since 1982 , topping the American League champion Tigers, 4-2, in Game 5 of the 102nd Fall Classic. It is World Series title No. 10 in 17 tries for one of baseball's signature organizations -- the most of any National League team. And they won it in the brand new Busch Stadium, built this year. The following parade in downtown St. Louis bnrought over a half of a million people to watch the parade on market. There also was a pep rally at the new Busch Stadium as well.

2.The July 19 Thunderstorms and Ice Storms on Nov. 30 in STL

These were historical storms. Both storms caused havoc, deaths and power outages for days. The ice storm was the biggest in Ameren UE's history as far as having over half of million people without power. Ameren UE also was on the hot seat on both occassions.

3.The Tunstall Murders in East St. Louis

This was the most gruseome story ever in ST. Louis in recent times regarding a young woman and her three children murdred by her friend. The city of East St. Louis got togther to raise money for the murdered.

4.ST. Louis Public Schools Fiasco/Firing of Super Creg Williams and Coach Floyd Irons

This was drama tenfold. The hiring and firing of Super Creg Williams and firing of veteran coach Floyd Irons and the hriing of interim Super Diana Bourisaw had the ST. Louis area rockin over the summer in regards to the policies of the School Board and its prez Veronica Obrien. At years end, it was reported the Board may be dismantled and let the State come in.

5.The Claire McCaskill/Jim Talent Democratic Midterm election/Maccasskill wins/Stem Cell reserach Bill Controversy

This was the biggest midterm election turnout in 12 years. The McCaskil/talent race was one of the most witched turnouts becasue of the controversial Stem cell bill that Mcaskill supported. The accompaniying Stem Cell commerical with actor Michael J Fox also caused controversy.

6.Katherine Dunham dies

Dance emperor died in May at the age of 96. The anthropologist and humunaitian lived in EasT St. Louis since the 1960s (she died in NYC) and had a museum built in her honor. As of late, the State Senate was trying to pass a bill to make the US Post Office in East St. Louis in her namesake.

7.Corey Spinks retains title/Has fight at Savvis Center with Karmazin fight

Although the fight was not as magical as his fight with Zab Judah in 2005, it still caused a buzz in the STL area with Spinks redeeming himslef ans regaining his belt.

8.St. Louis Dubbed the Most Dangerous City

As soon as the Cards won the World Series, a book by Morgan Quitno Press in Lawrence, Kansas, announced that St. Louis also had beaten Detroit for the title of "America's Most Dangerous City. Err body from Mayor Francis Slay to the homeless, felt it was a ploy to usurp the World Sereis fever and cash in.

9.POLICE BRULATLITY AND BLACK MEN. St. Lunatic Ali Jones gets tasered/Edmon Burns beating

I put these two events in the same cateogory. Black men and the police in the STl was not kind to each other. With St. Lunatics member Ali Jones, he was involved in a tasering with the Hazelwood police resulting in Jones receinvg over 50 Taser biuns form the incident. Specualtaions as to why Ali wa statsered by the police is still questionable. Police say he was resisting arrest. Ali say it was police brutality. Earlier in the year, St. Louis made national and international news when the Fox and NBC news stations videotaped Maplewood and St. Louis City police officers beating Edmon Burns following a high speed chase.

10.(tie) The Belleville Standoff/police officer John Brough shot in face
Many Black Nightclubs in the STL closes

Violence was very intense in the SLl area. One in partilcuar was the Belleville standoff involing Larry Sicka shooting his inlaws and causing a standof fwith Belleville Police resulting in one officer John Brough to get shot in tehg face. Sicka ftallay shot himself. meanwhile, nightclubs, mainly if African American population, were either closing due to violence or lack of popularity. The ones that closed were Club Formula and Plush. Otehr clubs that had violence were Spruill's, the Royal Palace Lounge and the "non-black" Pepper Lounge. FYI, Club Seven and Toxic closed its doors as well mainly to the clubs running its course.

The Top 10 EVENTZ in the STL in 2006

1.The World Series at new Busch Stadium, November

Hands down.

2.Nelly's Black and White Party at the Contemporary Art Musuem, July

This was definitely Hollywood meets St. Louis. Nelly brought it to the STL for a private party that brought on many A-Listers including Janet Jackson, Jermaine Dupri, Allen Iveson, Don King, Ashanti, Evander Holyfield, Jagged Edge and host Dl Hughley. Only drawback was they had the celebs in a VIP area as we watched them as though they were zoo animals.

3.The Cory Spinks Fight at Savvis,

It didnt get the seat numbers like the Zab Judah fight, but the event still got the STL hyped.

4.Live at the Levee Concerts at Archgrounds, July

India Arie, Cameo and Morris Day and The Time made this summer outdoor event. These concerts brought all STL peeps together and it was FREE.

5.Three the Hard Way Party, Club Dreams, July

This was probably the event that was the most disppointing on many levels. True, the event had hundreds to attend, but a fight occurred inside the club invoilving a security guy and Chingy's bodyguards. As a result, Jermaine Dupri and Janet-- who were waiitng to go inside-- did not come into the club. Usher was a no show. The only stars that came out were nelly, the St. Lunatics (oh and Gipp, well...) and Chingy.

6.Salute to Excellence to Eduation at the America's Center, Septmeber

This event has become a tradition in the STL. Although I didnt attend this year, this event, created by the ST. Louis American Newspaper, is the event to be seen in your best as the movers and shakers of the STL come to see the top educators get awarded for their efforts.

7.The Missouri Black Expo, America's Center, August

This two day family event was a turnaround for this organziation. After a disspointing showing last year (and after the controversy of the Missouri Black Expo concert series in 2004), this year's event returned to its essence. Eric Benet was the national recording artsist, but the highlight were the panel discussions they had up therre discussing err thing from black media, politics and communty based issues (Clair McCaskill even showed up!) .

8.Dreamgirls at the Black Rep, May

This was the perfect appetizer for the film in Decmber. This production was held over several weeks due to the popularity of this season's finale. I was also not surpised that this production swept this year's Woodie Awards as well.

9.Jensen Atwood at Magnolias, August

This was STL's kept secret event. Brought on by event planner's SCORCH, "Noah's Arc" star Jensen Atwood came through the STL during St. Louis Black Pride weekend. Unfortunately, not alot of publicty was done for this event (And we all know why), but his fans came out to support.

10.Denise Thimes at Mothers day Concert at Sheldon, May

One of the most elegant shows of the year. Thimes Mother's day concert was special cause I brought my mother to it. Packed with Sunday going patrons, it was the perfect Sunday event with jazz, gospel and blues, light banter and seeing her family on stage with her.

Top 10 Local socialitez in 2006

1. (TIE) Mocha Latte and Jamelle

Mocha Latte was err wherr her in the Lou. Whether it was promoting events through her website, selling VIP tickets at Three teh Hard Way, hosting Sunday Sip or Lyrics on the Lou at Fliter Bar, she had the ear to the ground in regards to what was happening here in the Lou. Tied with her was Jamelle. This sister was everywherr in the STL. Whether it was modeling in different fashion shows (including the Copia 1st anniversary), helping assist with alcohol at special events (eg Hipster's R Sole event), or just being an exclusive fashionista at various events (eg. Nellys Black and White Ball, Dub Party), you can best believe you will see this sista therre.

2.Jacque Land

As half of the successful event planning organziation Jacque Land and member of 100 Black Men. He was definitely on the spot whether it was his own events (A SOulful Christmas Party, 100 Black Men Program) or planning for someone else's event (Salute to Excellence) or chillin at someone else's event (Cafe Soul, Spinks After Party at Club Forumula), you know Land was in the house...with his fedora.

3.Kevin Johnson

OK, he's Pop Music Critic at St. Louis Post Dispatch, so he is entitled to be at almost every event, but Johnson changed it up with his Housewarming Party a few months ago that brought many of the STL young movers and shakers in the STL. It also spawned several other socialites to have their own housewarming events. Plus, his own b-day celebration at Dreams during Cafe Soul also was a change of pace for him.

4.Wendi Brown/Craig Blac

This Sonny of Cher of Hip-Hop radio, the co-pilots at the Craig Blac's Hot Morning Show on 104.1 FM, made their move sin the STL area. Whether they were at Club Dreams doin Sizzlin Saturdays or doing red carpet events at Chingy and Nelly's Black and White Party, this duo made their rounds.

5.Chocolate Tai

The rapper were at several private and red carpet events that put her on this list inclduing Chingy and Jibbs' red carpet CD parties and Nelly's After Taste event. Plus, you never knew what fashion garb she was going to grab you iwth.

6.Staci Static

This hot 104.1 radio perosonlity was a staple at Club Dreams' and Club Onyx Saturday spots. She also hosted many private events including the opening of Drunken Fish's Club Xes and attending after parties for Nelly and Ne-yo.

7.Christian Cofield

He was in err body's fahsion show this year (including Pronto, Alive, 4246 and recently Spellbound). He also never missed too many private events or club appearances either. He also had a nice B-day party at Bar Italia and attended several events with me (eg. the Best of RFT Party) as my guest.

8.Jamie Spencer

Jamie made his rounds in the STL area. Whether it is a free entry at a club (Russell Simmons Phat farm Party at the Loft) to attended priavte events, Jamie did his thing this year (and you saw him with a beautiful sista as his escort) . He also helped on the SCORCH event in August and also began singing stint at the Filter Bar.

9.Kamren Hopson

He is also a model who made his rounds on the runway and the club scene. He also beacme Stress Free Friday's masseuse which helped him bring him to socialite status. He also joined me as my guest at many events.

10.Hollabackboi

He pretty much was where I was whether it was the White Party at Loft or Penelope Jones party at Xes. He also helped get me into Nelly's Black And White Party this year. He also is a very out-of-the box dresser.
