OUT 130

Wassup blog readers!

Well, this will be the last post for OUT TOWN…..

This year.

GOTCHA.

After this week, I will do a BEST OF OUT TOWN 2006. Next week I will do a wrap of what was happening on my blog from January-June 2006. The last week of December I will do July-December 2006.

In the meantime, herre is some bitz of the newz:

Okay herr we go

LOCAL NEWZ-BITZ. Ameren is getting some of the power taken from them, sorta a speak. Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Ameren Corp.'s AmerenUE seeking compensation and punitive damages for its alleged actions and negligence resulting in the Dec. 14, 2005, breach of the Taum Sauk reservoir. Also, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Ameren Corp.'s AmerenUE seeking compensation and punitive damages for its alleged actions and negligence resulting in the Dec. 14, 2005, breach of the Taum Sauk reservoir.
Ameren customers have a chance to sound off about their experiences with the latest round of power outages. Another town hall meeting is set for today, Thursday, for Ameren customers. The topic will be Ameren's preparations before this month's winter storm and the restoration of power during the mass outages that followed. Ameren says it understands customers frustrations, however they say most of the outages were caused by storm damage and is not the company's fault. The meeting will be O’Fallon, Illinois at City Hall at 7 p.m………
Seems like the St. Louis Board of Public Schools is in yet more drama. School Board Prez Veronica Obrien is calling for the possibility of the State Government coming and taking over now that the prez and recently elected super Diana Bourisaw are at odds at what needs to be done to get the school’s population’s numbers up. Also, it has been rumored that the Board is in millions of dollars in debt…..
East St. Louis senior high is one of the worst performing schools in the St. Louis area. For years, the students have tested far below the state average in Illinois and attendance and graduation rates are also lousy. Even with its “Out of the Box programs” kmov.com, reported that privately, district administrators say that's because the high school spent so much and has so little to show for it......
St. Louis Blues Coach Mike Kitchen got out of the kitchen cause it got too hot for him resulting in his firing this week due to the Blues’ losing yet another season and having the lowest record of wins in NHL history. He was replaced by former Los Angels Kings Coach Andy Murray (It is interesting that the firing came on the heels of former Blues player Brett Hull’s retirement ceremony) ….
Further north of St. Louis, more like Chi-Town. There was a bomb scare at a shopping center in Rockford Ill which turned out to be a hoax.

NATIONAL NEWZ-BITZ. It looked like Taco Bell found the culprit of the deadly e-coli bacteria that spread through east of the country—scallions. As a result, Taco Bell’s across the country has discarded the scallions (and has loss revenue) in their menus. But they are not off the hook, it has also been reported that the regular white onions had tested positive for the bacteria. What's next, napkins???! …..
The oldest person in the world died this week at the age of 116. Elizabeth Bolden died last Monday at a nursing facility in Memphis, her grandson James Bolden told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Elizabeth was born on August 15, 1890 and had seven children, 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great-grandchildren, 220 great-great-great grandchildren and 75 great-great-great-great grandchildren, the newspaper said. She, who got relatives in St. Louis, was also in the Guinness Book of World records, too….
Evel Knievel has sued Kanye West, taking issue with a music video in which the rapper takes on the persona of "Evel Kanyevel" and tries to jump a rocket-powered motorcycle over a canyon. Knievel, whose real name is Robert Craig Knievel, filed a lawsuit in federal court in Tampa on Monday claiming infringement on his trademark name and likeness. He also claims the "vulgar and offensive" images depicted in the video damage his reputation (can you hear Evel saying Kanye West does not like white people…..)….. ….
House Democrats, insistent that they will hold lawmakers to higher standards, decided Tuesday that Rep. William Jefferson (news, bio, voting record) will not return to an influential committee until a federal corruption investigation involving him is completed. Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi said the Democratic Steering Committee had resolved that Jefferson, who last Saturday won a runoff election in his New Orleans district, will not be given back his spot on the Ways and Means Committee, the panel that determines tax and trade policies.

Now on to my long and lengthy last week;

On Thursday, I attended a private party for the opening of the male/female boutique I AM (CROWD GATHERING PIC IS ABOVE) owned by Chi-town based husband and wife team Ray and Cathy Escobar, located on the corner of Delmar and North and South in University City. I got there around 8 ish. I spent most of the time trying to find a parking space (which was very minimal). I even got into it with a guy who was behind me when I tried to park in front of a dumpster at an adjacent parking lot. The guy started honking his horn over and over. I opened my door and shouted, “What!” Then he said in a lispy tone, “That’s not a parking space and I need to drive through.” I wanted so bad to call him err thing but a child of God, so I shouted, “Well drive back then so I can get out!.”

So he obliged and probably thought I was going to get out of my car and whip his noggin with my hand, but I drove off and got a parking space on the side of a building near IAM. SO after that drama, I went in and it was a modest crowd. The party was hosted by Hipster magazine and jack Daniels (who was giving away two free shots of Jack Daniels’ mixed drinks). I also ran into a college buddy Elson Williams who asked if I attended SIUE and went to bally. I responded YES. I’ve seen him around at a distance but never had a chance to chat with him. He is now working with Hipster mag’s editor in chief Keenan Harris which is a cool deal cause Keenan is a mover and shaker and can teach Elson the ropes of event planning (Now Elson what’s up with you and your pops, Elson SR being in competition with each other?)
I also got into a pic that Graphic Designer Kevin Mccoy was taking of people posing with merchandise from the store. I was totally taken off guard for the Hollywood moment, but I mustered enough strumph to pull it off. LOL. Afterward, I also started taking pics of the crowd and dropped my camera yet again (This will be the second time I have done this. The first was during the Café Soul event about a month ago). I looked at it and saw that it slightly buckled, but it is still working, though thank goodness.
So anyway, I hob nobbed with the other invited gusts which comprised of the skater boi crowd. They also had pizza for us to munch on that was cool. They also had a nice red carpet fashion show with some “models” (and I put that in parenthesis) to model the latest that was in the shop (You can see the fashions on OUT 129)

It was now going on 10ish and in comes rapper Chingy and his entourage. The place got erect as a board when he came through as people took shots of him and grabbing on him for conversation. I am one of the guilty one son this cause I pulled Clingy to the side (as much as I could due to his bodyguards watching Chingy like a panther to a hunt). My invited guest, theater director Joel King wanted to get Chingy's attention someway so he could ask Chingy to possibly star in his urban musical Reel Life, so I told Joel that it’s all about taking control of the situation. So, I walked up to Chingy, shook his hand and introduced him to Joel.
After that, Joel spoke to him about his project and the rapper told him to get in touch with his ST. Louis manager, Mousie (who was also in the same vicinity when the ordeal took place.) Around this time, about 200 or so were in the building. I also managed to recruit two guys for my masculine fashion show project. One was Clarence Jones who works with AFLAC and Robert Whitlock, who was one of the models in the fashion show.

Around 11ish, I had enough fun and it was time to get ready to go in the J.O.B. at the Water geyser in east Saint for the late shift. On the 1s and 2s were Nappy Needles and fashion designer DJ Anisto.

Others in the house were Chingy’s protégé’ Spiffy, St. Lunatic member Kyjuan, DJ Sno’ s manager, Isis Jones (who is back from her job hunt and possible Clear Channel axe), SYGU, Black Spade, Kevin Johnson, Christian Cofield, and Dana Christian.

On Friday, I checked out Stress Free Fridays at the Loft Jazz club. The set was cool, a nice happy hour for those who are 9 to 5ing. . It was definitely an over 35 crowd up in there. This was the first week back sense canceling last week’s SFF at the Loft due to the ice storms. Well, apparently it still must have been stormy, cause there were no free beer this time around or food. Now, with any Happy Hour that I’ve been to, they have something free for the patrons.
Well, the only thing free was the admission so I guess we better had been happy with that. But err thing was cool especially when ST. Louis cover funk band Boogie Chyld performed (SEEN IN PIC ABOVE) on the makeshift sage near the dance floor. They were performing hits from Earth Wind and Kool and the Gang. They even broke out Janet’s rock gem, “Black cat.”
Before I left out, I ran into my boy Kamren, who does message therapy at Stress Free’s to pub up his biz. He started talking about a good event idea that he wants to kick off next year that I’m sure will be on point. But the tripped out moment came when this sista walked up to me and began to get her holla on. I was sayin see ya to Kam cause I was headed to Inkosi Designs Kevin Bryant and State rep Rodney Hubbard’s B-day party at Gary’s Fine Dining spot.
Now, let me back track a lil bit cause its important to this story. Because it was frigid outside, I had on a gray wool cap that could be doubled as a skully. So the sista walked up and spoke. I spoke back. Then she started talking about why I didn’t take off my hat. What? I told her that it was cold. She asked how did I wear my hair. I told her in cornrolls. Then she said Oh, it must be a little skeet under there. I said NO, I just don’t wanna take it off. Then she took my left hand to see if there was a wedding ring or a tan line with a ring should be. I then told her that I was single and if she was trying to ask for my digits. She swore that she wasn’t tryin to sweat me, but she was so close up on me that I could see myself in her eyeglasses (Mind, you she was decent looking.)
Then she told me that I was hiding the message chair that my boy was trying to do his messages and was egging to see if she wanted to get a message. I told her that Kam does the best messages. Well, before she got gone she told me she had to go powder her nose and if I am gone before she comes back that it was nice meeting me. I told her OK. Man, I was bouncing like a b-ball after she left. I was slate for Kevin Bryant’s the b-day party.

So, after Stress Free, I went on to Kevin Bryant’s and Rodney Hubbard’s B-Day at Gary’s Fine dining (GUYS SEEN IN PIC ABOVE) . When I got there, I was asking the table server I was with a private party and host/comedian Darrius Bradford was saying on the mike, “Come on server let the man in, don’t let him pay to get in herre.” That got the crowd laughing. I wasn’t expecting to be on the spot, but it was all good.

The party was cool. An older crowd that was wising the b-day boys a happy B-day. It was great entertainment by some of STL’s singers including LLC, Pokier (who blew the house down), Jeff Hardin and course the craziness of Darius Bradford (his joke of growing up with oily skin was hilarious). Darius even ordered tons of Grey Goose and cran for half of the b-day guests. The b-day boys spoke to the crowd and gave their itinerary for the rest of the night and beyond.

I got a seat near my girl April griffin who was sportin a funky Foxy brown Afro Puff (I got pics). Later on, poet Fo Feet came through sat next to me at the table. She looked a little disappointed. Come to find out she was to perform poetry (in her place was legendary poet Percy Wells). She said she wasn’t told when she was to perform. But my thing is, if you are performing, you should get there early to find out. Okay?

Anyway, we ate some party food (types of chicken, meatballs, and cheese with crackers) and the cake was delish. Meanwhile, I walked around and mingled with the b-day well wishers. The real party happened at Club Dreams, but I was getting pooped so I just rolled to the crib (Kevin say that he was so plastered he forgot what all that happened!)

In the house were author Tracy Foster, Freeman Bosley Junior Show’s Darrion Phelps, and local singing group Mo Tre.

FOR PICS OF THE B-DAY PARTY GO TO OUT 126

On Saturday, I checked out Platinum group’s 5th annual Soulful Christmas(PIC ABOVE IS PLATINUM'S JACQUE LAND WITH BROTHA SANTA ) , held for the second year in a row at casa lama Ballroom (I liked it when it was at the Sheldon, but I am not flippin’ the bill on it, so., who am I to say). Me and hollabackboi checked it out. We got there about 8: 30 and I knew what the routine was with their parties. When you check in, you go upstairs to network with the participating businesses with your scorecard and try and guess which biz matches the questions they ask. In the end, you receive a gift bag (This go round was President Casino goodies like a t-shirt, pocket mirror, etc.) One of the biz people was DAnthony personal trainer at Bally in Clayton who got is own strength training biz goin on that night.

After that I spent the night taking snaps and showing off my custom made Kleoware suit (black suit coat with African cowry shells and designs and black pants with slits on the side with cowry shells and a stain red butterfly collar shirt) that local music producer James Glasco said was fly (I’m always fly according to his opinion. LOL)

Performing were Deandre Perryman, Aloha, Denise Thimes, Angela Jackson and Ms. Vaughn who reprised her Woodie Award winning role of Effie in the Black Rep’s Dreamgirls and saaaaaaang, “And I am Telling You’ which brought the house down. A touching moment came when one of the keyboard players , Jeremiah Allen, were singing a slow song (I cant recall hat he sang—I was a bit buzzed at the time), but Platinum Group owners, husband and wife team Jacque and Leata Land were on stage and began an impromptu slow dance (AWWWWWWWWWWWWW). I would say about 500 people were there. Baby O was again on the 1s and 2s.
This year’s party was much better than last year. I think someone gave them an ear about last year especially with eth line of entertainment, Not saying that the lineup was bad, but it was a lot of slow music that was putting people to sleep. This year, the lineup was lively and got people ready to get on the dance floor (and the music this year was up to date! Thank you!)

They also had their traditional prize giveaways. Well, that’s I have (and all I remember after 2 camo beers prior to the event

In the house were St. Louis American’s Bill Beene, Wiley Price, and Mary Winbush, Anheuser Busch’s Johnny Furr (No free beer again>? LOL), Eric Rhone, Kevin Johnson (who won a prize. FIXED! LOL), Christian Cofield, and Jeff Small.

FOR PICS OF THE SOULFUL X-MAS PARTY, GO TO OUT 127

On Sunday, it was a toss up between going to the Sentinel’s YES I CAN banquet (PIC OF PEOPLE AT A TABLE IS ABOVE) at the Renaissance Grand or a fashion show on the East Boogie side. I decided to go to the banquet (unfortunately but fortunate) cause I was invited by hollackboi due to he had an extra ticket that one of his employees at Barnes Jewish college didn’t want to go. So, I decided to go there cause well at least I was gonna get a free dinner out of it. LOL.

I met up with hollabackboi about 6ish and the main problem was trying to find which part of the Grand the event was taking place. We asked one of the garage attendants who had an attitude like a stink monster but he told us to follow the crowd to the vent. We actually walked across the street from the Renaissance Grand to Americans; Place, walked down a flight of steps to get to the ballroom where it was going to be held.

From the lobby, I knew this event was going to be a long one. It was mostly the over 35 crowd full of STl politicians and movers and shakers. The banquet was celebrating the successes of the following educator John Windom (Excellence in Education Award), boxing trainer Kevin Cunningham(Sports Manager of the Year) , Nelly’s manager Tony Davis (Businessman of the Year), STl boxing champ Cory Spinks (Sportsman of the Year), The Honorable Larry Williams (Public Servant of the Year), and rapper Nelly (Entertainer of the Year).

Meanwhile, I sat at the table with hollabackboi’s colleagues at Barnes Jewish College. Three of them were nurses that were about to graduate who were from the Motherland (Kenya, South Africa and Ethiopia). I didn’t really know too many people there (which is unheard of for me), but with STl the way it is, this crowd supported the Sentinel (I’m sure there were going o be no ST. Louis American or Argus supporters at this spot.)

Unfortunately, half of the honorees were no shows. Kevin Cunningham and Cory Spinks sent their wives (They were in Miami training for a fight). his wife, Nelly sent his aunt Chalena Mack and Tony Davis, well, was absent (It was said that Nelly and Tony were in Hollywood doing a biz deal). We at least got a cell phone acceptance from Cory Spinks when his wife held up her phone to the mic and he gave a nice thank you.

The guest speaker was Atty (and the Sentinel publisher's brother) Reginald Williams. Members of the Sentinel dinner chair were Citigroups’ Melanie DiLeo, Human Development corp. exec Ruth Smith, YMCA exec Michael Johnson, Vashon Alum Dr. Charlene Jones, St. Louis Community college chancellor Dr. Henry Simmons, President of the St. Louis Board of Alderman Honorable Jim Shrewsberry, Community Renewal Development exec Sal Martinez, President of Harris Stowe U Dr,. Henry Givens, Stl City Comptroller Darlene Green, president of urban league Jim Buford and License Collector elect Hon. Mike McMillan.

Here are some of the other interesting things that happened there:

During community leader Sam Moore sang the National anthem and as we stood up, Educator and Africanist Alice Windom still sat in her seat.

Nelly’s father, Cornell Sr. came to the banquet, in a nice "funeral" suit with freshly done corn rolls.

Sentinel Publisher Michael Williams confusing speech on how the black press effects politics was very head scratching. He started off OK when he talked about the first black press newspaper in Philadelphia, called The Demosthenian Shield but he tried to tie in the history of slavery and Civil war in his speech, it threw off what he was trying to say and how the press is use din politics today.

St. Louis based comedian Rodney Winfield, captain hat and all, was already drunk, was at a table with some guests and he talking at inappropriate times causing people to walk out the event.

St. Louis rapper/singer Jennices performed with her rap crew with a lot of expletive language and many of the older people in the crowd looked in almost horror and disbelief of what they were seeing.

One of the dinner servers kept dropping trays.

At our table, one Barnes Jewish employee played a prank on hollabackboi when she was able to get an extra plate for an empty seat and asked hollaback if he wanted it. He got the plate and one of the female servers busted him and said, “I thought yousaid someone was sitting in the empty seat.”

Overall, the YES I CAN event was OK. Hollaback and I left before the guest speaker. It was two hours in the banquet and I had seen enough. I wished I would have gone to the fashion show, but, like I said earlier, I got some good chicken and chocolate soufflé out of the ordeal. CAn I do thsi event next year, NO I CAN'T!

CD SPOTLIGHT

I copped a demo CD of St. Louis-based group, Mo Tre when I was rapping to one of the members at Kevin Bryant/Rodney Hubbard’s B-Day Party at Gary’s Fine Dining. This eponymous five-song “CD-let” has the vocal sounds that is reminiscent of the 90s hip-hop groups like Shai, Silk and even Jodeci. Nice harmonies, smooth mid-tempo ballads (especially, the uber-freaky, “Make No Mistake” which could easily be a hit on radio) and one hip-hop midtempo groove, entitled, “Hot Spot” featuring local rapper Potzee.

Although this CD-let is more of a sample than an actual full CD, it is no question this handsome trio has a promising future to bring "grown and sexy" R&B back to the I-pod generation.. For more info on Mo Tre, go to
