OUT 139

Hotep! This is your blogger of the STL, Ma’atology here givin it to ya for the second week of the New Year.

OK as, the old school group, Damian Dame, sang, “Let’s Get Right Down to it.”

LOCAL NEWZ-At the time of this publishing, we would have found out whether the ST. Louis Public School Board will be taken over by a three-member State Government panel…They are starting preliminary construction of I-64 and 170 to give people a preview of the total shutdown of 1-64 this Spring…..

NATIONAL NEWZ--President Dubya was being all Silk the Shockker saying it WAS his fault for the damage and carnage from this Iraq war. In a televised speech President Bush is telling lawmakers in a televised speech on Wednesday that he will send thousands more U.S. troops to Iraq's two most troubled regions, in a plan that Democrats are resisting as a major escalation of a 31/2-year-old war.
Bush announced his new war strategy and is expected to call for as many as 20,000 additional troops. The extra forces would be sent to Baghdad, which has been consumed by sectarian violence, and the western Anbar Province, a base of the mostly Sunni insurgency and foreign al-Qaida fighters. Where is he gonna get these troops? Seems like the same ones who were there before will be re-employed there. These sounds like desperation on the part of Dubya before his term is over this year. And he doesn’t need Congress’ approval because he can play the “war card” to do his tactics……..

The Florida Gators shocked top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes 41-14 to win the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) title game on Monday. The win also completed an unprecedented double for the University of Florida as it became the first school in U.S. collegiate history to hold both the football and basketball titles at the same time (this game was so en vogue that Congress was going to pass a bill to take a break on their 100 hours of passing bills to either go to or watch this game. Now that’s deep)……

U.S. helicopter gunships launched new attacks Tuesday against suspected al-Qaida members, a Somali official said, a day after American forces launched airstrikes in the first offensive in the African country since 18 U.S. troops were killed there in 1993…….

Let's get James Brown body buried for the Godfather's sake!...................

Elvis B-day was Jan 8. He would have been 72 if he lived (or is he
still)? But more importantly, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s (PICTURED ABOVE) B-day celebration will be this weekend (he was actually born Jan 19) . He would have been 78 had he lived (For some reason U2’s powerful rock ballad, Pride” rings in my mind and that King Dream Chorus Holiday Celebration chorus video with all of those 1980s R&B and rap stars that was released in 1986, the year of the 1st national holiday celebration (sans Phoenix. Ariz at the time) . This will be the 21st anniversary of the U.S. recognizing his B-day as a national holiday.

According to wikipedia.com, when King died on April 4 1968, Rep John Conyers into’d a bill to make his b-day a national holiday? And unions across the country supported the bill in the 1970s. It was cemented when Grammy Award winning singer Stevie Wonder recorded the song, “Happy Birthday” for his platinum selling CD, “Hotter than July: in 1980. Six years later it became reality. N (Greenville County , NC was the last county to be on board to honor MLK in 2006) It was hard road to toll for this holiday, but it happened during our lifetime. Let us all be mindful of all of his accomplishments (and how his legacy is being handled).

Yes, he had a dream, and was about non-violence tactics to solve human rights problems, but King began to get weary on these tactics and became more militant on his talks. Near the end of his life he was very outspoken of the ills of the world especially the Vietnam War (which at this time he was viewed as a pariah). He even put out a speech called, “Why I Opposed the Vietnam War” (which won ironically a posthumous Grammy award (His only Grammy) in 1970 for Best Spoken recording. So whatever you do, do something to honor this man.

And Now on to my travels.

Last Saturday, I checked out the 30th Season premiere of the Black rep’s production of the Broadway winning play, “Ain’t Misbehavin,’ with my gal pal, Jewelanda Hodges at the Grandel Square Theatre (CAST PICTURED ABOVE).

Here is my review of the production:

Black Rep’s 'Ain’t Misbehavin' hits some of the right notes

The Black rep opened their 30th mainstage season last weekend with the Tony-Award winning musical revue, 'Ain’t Misbheavin’ at the Grandel Sqaure Theatre.

Directed by Black rep Producing Director/Founder Ron Himes ‘Misbehavin’ chronicles the life and times of the inimitable Thomas “Fats” Waller who rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club, honky tonk drives and juke joints that were jumpin to the new beat—swing.

The two hour production, which runs until Feb. 4, starred such venerable Black rep actors/singers including Drummond Crenshaw as Fats Waller (These days, the cast name is now Ken for actor Ken page who starred in the Broadway Award winning play in 1978 onward), J. Samuel Davis as Andre and Anita Jackson as Armelia.

The cast is talented and lively and their performances of the 20 plus Waller were filled with spunk and energy (especially Jackson who put on yet another Woody Award and Kevin Kline Award performance).

Some of the standout songs performed were “Squeeze me,” “The Ladies who sing in the Band”(a song montage portraying the 40’s radio shows during WWII), “Mean to me,” “the Vipers Drag,” and “Your Feets Too Big.”

There were, however, some disappointments. The audio was a bit off and distorted which distracted from the show. The actress who plays, Nell (Carter), Julia Nixon is OK. She has a beautiful voice, but she is miscast in this role of a more big-boned and brassy singer (like the late Nell Carter in her Tony Award winning role) ) .

Crenshaw as Fats (or Ken) is also miscast. Yes, he has the bulging eyes and comical flare, but with such a pivotal role, the character should have been taller ( Black rep vet AC Smith would have been perfect for this role).

There also isn’t any piano licks from Crensahw, ala Ken Page’s fats, which would have made it more interesting (the piano licks were done by Charles Creath, who did an excellent job, accompanied by a four piece band behind the actors).

What gives “Misbehavin’ its flair is the scenery. The set of a caricature of fats Waller and a mural of juke joint players designed by Regina Garcia is immaculate, lighting by Kathy Perkins givin the mood of a flashy cabaret and The flapper/zoot suit costumes designed by Myrna Colley Lee were on point that added to the “couture’ of the era.

The Black Rep’s version of “Misbehavin’ is definitely worth going to check out just for the mere fact that it’s a seminal Broadway piece. Like many critcs who have seen, it, there is something missing in this production—I cant put my finger on it, but whatever it is , hopefully it is worked out during its tenure on stage.

For ticket info and show times, contact the Black Rep offices at 314/534-3810 or 1717 Olive, 4th floor, 9 am-6 p.m.(weekdays), 9 am-1 p.m. (Saturdays).

============================================================

On Sunday, I checked out the GOOD HOOKED ON HEALTH EXPO that was held at the America’s Center. It was a lot of folks up in therre (Maybe it was cause it was raining heavily and people needed somewherr for shelter.LOL). But anyway, they had err thing from health screenings for various diseases, a mainstage of kickboxing, vendors from Ballys to G-Garvin’s recipe taste samples and plenty of interactive sports for the youngins. They really stepped up the games cause I don’t recall last year having so much stuff for kiddies to do 9and the face-painting booth was popular too done by my mother’s New Macedonia Baptist church friend, Barbra Carter ).

While I was therre, I ran into Africanist Kelly Wimbley who was therre with his two young sons as we chewed the fat about old days (I’ve been knowing Kelly since 1991)and I ask dhim if he was interested in being a part of my fashion show to be Black Jesus (His dreads are off the chain) . He also shared an interesting story with me about his interaction with singer India. Arie when she came to the STL for Live on the Levee and the almost hook-up came about until some groupies messed up the play. Hmmmm interesting.

I thought Turn Up the Heat star G. Garvin was going to be therre on that day, but he was therre on Saturday. The only celeb I saw therre was Diamond Dallas PAge (PICTURED ABOVE) who was therre last year. He was there signing autographs of his book, “Yoga for Regular Guys.” (Who was that sista with the white girl doll hair who was as skinny as a board but had Dolly Parton ta-ta’s that was in his camp? )

Afterward, I called my model gal Paris (PICTURED ABOVE ON THE RIGHT WITH DEISGNER NAVISH) and she told me of Club Rio’s monthly Crunk Sundays event where they showcase designers and hip-hop acts from the STL to bridge the gap between the STL and East St. Louis. She told me was in a fashion show/showcase that was going to feature designs by her friend, up an coming fashion designer Navish. Paris invited me to come through as her photographer and I obliged.

I got there about 8ish and saw that there were barely cars in the parking lot across form the club, so I decide dtio wait around a bit and saw that therre was a car that wa sparking next to mine. Come to find out, it was photographer/OhMyy Model creator Chantell Overton. We chatted a bit as she was waiting for one of the models to pay her. We talked on about what was happening in ’07 for both of us and then all a sudden one of her ex-employees who used to work with her was going to their car and Chantell said, “I should run they ass over.” (WHOOSH). She was telling me how that person was going on myspace and talking behind Chantells’ back about some untruths. (TISK TISK TISK).

Anyway, it was going on 9ish and I decided to go on in (I knew that it wasn’t going to start on time cause it was “one of those fashion shows.” I predicted that the show was going to start at 10 (it did0 and that it was going to last hours and hours(it did, but I only stayed for about 90 minutes).

So when I got up to the door, I was searched for weapons and one of the security guys let me in. I went up to the Box Office and I showed the lady my press pass and told her I was Paris’ photographer. The sista in the office called up someone on her celly (I’m assuming it was Paris). Then, the lady asked what my name was and I told her. After about a minute or so of this, she told me I can go in.

So when I walked inside the club, I saw that they remodeled since the last time I was in Club Rio (which was about four years ago). Gone are the paintings of swimming pools and mirrors on the walls. So, I got a seat at one of the tables and sat and sat and listened to the STL-stripper hip hop music (One song was called, “I love to get my Pussy Licked”---WHOAH”). Young Jeezy’s DVD was playing on the plasma TVs as I waited for an hour for the show to start.

Good thing they had some free food cause I was getting H. to the U…to the NGRY. They had some baked chicken, mac and cheese, and shrimp sticks.

The show was nice. Navish is a very talented young sista. The models had three scenes: party wear, swimwear and evening wear (I really liked the gowns). In between they had some local hip-hop acts including Lil Ty and Hard and R&B thug signer Thomas Clark. (After them, I lost track of who was on the mike) . Around 11ish, St. Louis rapper Rucka Puff and his entourage came through 9I wasn’t for sure if he performed or not cause I left at 11:30) and Stl rapper Penelope Joens was supposed to show up (She musta came after I left too). The crowd started to get rowdy around 11ish and you can cut the blunt smoke with a knife 9Nowonder I was gettin hungry. LOL)

After greeting Paris, and other models including Lady, Nia and designer Navish and taking more pics, I bounced.

On Wednesday, I didn’t go to the Jamie Foxx show at the Fox (Hows that for redundancy. LOL) cause therre weren’t anymore press tickets for it (WINK WINK), but I rolled through the supposed After Party at the Loft. But before I get into all that, I thought that R&B signer and American Idol winner fantasia was supposed to be the opener for Foxx, but come to find out she wasn’t scheduled to open for him in the STL. She is only on selected dates of Foxx’s Unpredictable tour. Anyway, I heard they had some comedian named Spiffy opened up and Foxx did a decent job on stage with the comedy and singing. I heard he was having mike problems during the singing portion of his show, but he kept on with it.

I went to the Loft for this supposed After Party and got there about 10 so I could get a parking space and beat the mad rush of people who were coming through the Loft which was the “official” after party and that concertgoers got in FREE with the showing of their ticket stub (Can you believe it? FREE and LOFT, just don’t go hand in hand. LOL)

I went in and the bouncers were sitting down chilling and didn’t search me which I found odd cause they usually on the case on that. One bouncer just asked me what kind of camera I had with me and that was it. So I walked in there and it was sparse—about 50 or so people. It was mostly the 25 and older crowd doing two steps as Eric Michael Robeson was on the 1s and 2s with the R&B (And what was up with the two buzzed guys two stepping together holding hands and err thing!). As I was walkin’ around I ran into Loft DJ Soundz who was playin’ cell phone chess with one of the Loft bus boys at the bar. Soundz was waiting to get on the 1s and 2s after Robeson for the After Party crowd.

The DJ kept saying that the Loft was the official After Party for Jaime Foxx and their fliers had both Foxx and Fantasia on it, but I got a text from Kevin Johnson who was at the show that they made an announcement at the end of the show that there was not going to be an After Party. So I was confused. The Loft is saying one thing and the Fox was saying another. Well, I figured it out when I ran into St. Louis American’s Graphics Artist Melvin Moore (Is you an model Kassandra an item these days? LOL)said the same thing that they made an announcement at the concert that there will not be an After Party.

Well, I just put my two brain cells together I concluded that Jamie Foxx was not going to be at the Loft and that the Loft was just using the names of the two stars to draw people there. There was nothing on the flier that said that they were actually coming through. Was sit misleading? Yes. Was it false advertising Not really. Did it get people up in therre? You bet your sweet ass it did!

Around 11ish, you would have thought someone said there will be a free shopping spree up at the Loft. They started hurling up in there like a speed train. Some of the local VIPs I saw roll through there beside the mentioned were No. 1 Outtown socialite and model Jimmelle (Sorry for misspelling your name), SYGU, Mo Witherspoon and his lady (not his wife. OOOps), and socialite Big Tah (No Mocha? LOL) I also saw the Rose Man who was wearing this baaaaaaaaad red fur length coat. Pushin flowers must be a wonderful thing.

As the note went on I saw BET comedian Darius Bradford (who was wearing a tan colored funeral suit up in there)and later on Chingy and his two bodyguards came through (Soundz played Chingy's “Dem jeans” when he entered the building). It was going around midnite and I was about to turn into a pumpkin cause I had to roll out for the late shift at the Water Geyser. But there was one observation—What was up with so many britahs wearing fur coats? Long, short and pimped out. I thought I needed to go to Demay Furrs on Cherokee and demand for mines. LOL

STL-TIDBITZ. Former St. Louis Cards short stop and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith just published his own kids book called, “Hello Fredbird” published by children’s sports books publisher Mascot. The book talks about the sights and sounds of Game Day. The Wiz was just at Shenandoah Grade school reading to the youngins (I wonder of that annoying Fred Bird mascot was therre.)......................Speaking on former cards, I guess it’s strike one for former St. Louis Cards first baseman, Mark McGwire who was voted down in the running for making the Hall of Fame cause of his “I-don’t –talk-about-the-past-testimony in April 2005 of whether he done steroids or not. What’s next, tearing down the Mark McGwire sign on Interstate 70?.............. Forbes listed their Top 100 companies to work for. The only STL chain that made the Top 10 was Whole Foods was No. 5 (therre’s one on Brentwood in Clayton). The other companies only company that the STL would be familiar with. Other familiar companies that made the list were Starbucks (No. 16), Quick Trip (No. 20), Nordstrom (No. 24), Edward Jones (No. 29) Aflac (No. 73) and St. Louis based AG Edwards (No. 99—I guess on this one. LOlL They said what made them great were they serenade employees at the STL HQ and they give out Cards tix. I sho didn’t see no box seats when I temped there last April. )……..........Congrats to newly Missouri Senator Clair McCaskill and House Rep William Bill Clay were sworn in in Washington DC. Kudos to Washington University alum/Hollywood screenwriter Timothy J. Sexton on writing the adapted screenplay to, “Children of Men” which made 12 million at the Box Office coming in 3rr place. He also wrote adapted screenplays to the HBO films, “Boycott: and “Walkout.” ….............Speaking of movies, St. Louis based actor/comedian Cedric The Entertainer’s flick ” Codename: Cleaner” failed horribly at the Box Office debuting poorly in 12th place and bowed to $4.2 million. This is the second starring vehicle for Cedric that failed. The first was the 2005 release of a black remake of the TV show, “The Honeymooners” which only grossed $13 million and debuted at No. 8 when it was released. Then, his Fox TV variety show four years ago also failed. I hate to see that cause you know Tinseltown don’t give too many chances to US to keep on failin’…...........The new hot power couple in the STL his Kevinikki (or is is Nikkevin?) LOL….East St. Louis native and 2004 American Idol finalist Deandre Perryman (I didn’t know you were mar’red. LOL) is getting some spins on STL radio these days. Congrats on that Mr Ginda….......... I was looking at a repeat of the show, “Everybody Hates Chris” this past Sunday and saw St. Louis entertainment manager Harold guy in a scene. Was I just seeing thing?...I was looking at a billboard on Interstate 64 going right after you leave EasT St. Louis toward Illinois and saw St. Louis model Carlos McCalurin posing with other dapper looking models for The Power of Change Christian Center…............I have found former Dee Lee Morning Show personality/comic Jessie Taylor. He is now on Hallelujah 1600 AM behind the boards on Michael Davis Show from 6 am-10 am. (He also told me that his former colleague on 100.3 The Beat, Ebony Walker will be back on once a week on this station as well. And congrats Jess on your newborn and your upcoming nuptials in July. …............Local singer/socialite Tiffany has a hot new my space of her songs that she will be putting on her first Cd. I will keep you posted…............. You can still see my article on the art exhibit, “Interplay” at the Regional Arts Commission can be seen on the West End Word Newspaper’s website www.westendword.com. ......When I was waiting in my car at the Casino Queen parking lot waiting to go into work on Tuesday, I saw about six white guys and one white lady gathered by this car and two of the guys started to have a Brokeback Mountain moment. One front saddled this other guy and was going to town. Now if that were some brothas doin that, the scuirty truck would have ran them over trying to get them off the property. VanitaApplebaum Entertainment Services, Inc. presents Anthony David in concert at St. Louis’ new hotspot, Gravity, 1620 Delmar, Sunday, January 14, 2007 at 7P.
Anthony David doesn’t mind being compared to artists such as Anthony Hamilton, Darius Rucker (Hootie and the Blowfish,) Bill Withers and David Ryan Harris just to name a few. Though there are some similarities, David’s raspy, full-bodied tone has carved a niche of its own. “It’s about good melodies and cool words. I’m just trying to give back the same feeling I get with a song I like” David stated.
The Savannah, Georgia native made his composing debut with songs for India.Arie. “Part of My Life” (Acoustic Soul, 2001) and “There’s Hope” (Testimony, 2006) are hits David can be applauded for. He served as a background vocalist for India.Arie prior to making noise with his debut album Three Chords & the Truth (2004). His sophomore release, The Red Clay Chronicles (2006), features smooth tunes such as “Smoke One”, “Stop Playin” and “Words”. David’s gentle yet fierce caress of his acoustic guitar offers an intimate experience for both projects.
It is with great anticipation that St. Louis awaits the arrival of Anthony David. VanitaApplebaum Entertainment Services, Inc.
