OUT 146

Hello one and all, this is Ma’atology one more time for ya in the ’07.

Things have been getting interesting on the national level with the State of the YOU-nion address with President Dubya addressing the nation in the nation’s capitol. Reports say that Dubya has the lowest poll popularity in generations (Well, isn’t that the case with any lame duck prez) It was all pomp and circumstance as he addressed the Dem majority Congress. It was all about the Iraqi war and him pleading to re-send 20,000 more troops into harms way. With all the niceties, I’m sure the Dems cant wait to get this man out of office who calls himself THE DEcider (ala the Terminator). But the highlight of the stat eof the union address was seeing the New York Subway Hero Wesley Autrey,. A brother, get his kudos for saving a man who fell down the subway tracks in NYC and he climbing down from the platform and placing his body on the guy when the train was coming. He was keeping it real up in the House doing hip-hop/Arsenio Hall dap to err one. It was hilarious.

Also, in the past week, we've seen three exciting new candidates lining up to run for president on the Democratic side. Senator Barack Obama led the way with an announcement on Tuesday on his web site. Senator Hillary Clinton followed suit on Saturday with her own web site announcement. And then Governor Bill Richardson took to the Internet on Sunday to launch his presidential exploratory committee. Each candidate is a serious contender for the Democratic nomination, and that means big change could be in store for the party. So we got an African American, a woman and a Latino in the running. How diverse can you get?

Looks like Superbowl 41 will be Naptown vs. Chi-town on Feb. 4 in Miami. And again, another first, 2 black coaches (Bears’ Lovie smith and Colts’ Tony Dungy) being a part of this occasion. Oh and P Diddy is throwing a 12 hours of Diddy set that weekend as well.

Yawl got your new passports? You know it will be hard for the U.S. citizens to come back into the country (even visiting Canada) without it. If not, Americans will eb treated like terrorists. Is it me or is Big Brother biting the hand that feeds him? Hmmmm.

The hit film, Dreamgirls” made news this week as it led the pack of Academy Award nominations for this years awards with eight. But what is odd is, it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture or Director (for Bill Condon). Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson were nominated in supporting roles and three of its nods were in the Best Song category (including “Listen” sung by Beyonce). Critics are saying that the film was overhyped to be a shoo in for Best Picture, that the Academy decided to snub it. But I think it had to do with the many persons of color getting nominated (eg. Penelope Cruz, Dimon Hunsou, Forrest Whitaker, Will Smith, Murphy, and Hudson) this year that they new for sure if Dreamgirls was nominated for Bets Picture it would win. All in all, I’m sure there will be more surprises when its all said and done.

Are we gonna be “Losing Isiah?” So do yawl think actor Isiah Washington is going to get fired over his gay slur of his acting colleague on the hit show Gray; Anatomy? It doesn’t look good. He denied the allegations at the Golden Globes, but err one know s that he said it. From reports, Isiah has had some anger issues in the past. He even got into a tousle when he was on the show, “Soul Food” when he got into an altercation with actress Nicoli Ari Parker who played Terru and the executive producer of the show. I don’t get him? Whats really going on with Isiah.

For yawl Noah’s Arc fans, LOGO decided to pull the plug on its highest rated show and make a flick out of it instead.

And what was up with the lady who died of water intoxication after doing a water drinking contest at a Sacramento radio morning show over some Justin Timberlake tickets ? That was too crazy!

Locally, the Ben Ownby-Mike Devlin and Hornbeck Miracle in Missouri saga moves on. What’s tripped out was the accused Mr Devlin (OR SHALL I SAY DEVIL-INN) is complaining that his cell is not up to par (can you imagine) and the visitor he had from the NY Post, Susannah Callahan, didn’t property ID herself when she came to “visit” Devlin in jail. Devlin complained that the reporter misled him to think that she was with a local newspaper rather than a national chain. Huh? What is going on? Is it me, or is Devlin trying to become a martyr? Esssssssscuse me, you don’t get sympathy for kidnapping, okay?

What’s also is a trip is, the Hornbeck’s was getting a new home donated by a construction, a four bedroom flat 60 miles from the STL where it will have an office for the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation. (I’m sure the Ownby’s are pissed about this—I guess their son was just 4 years too late). Then, it has been speculated that Shawn Hornbeck was kidnapped in order to help Devlin kidnap other kids including Ownby! This case is getting even more bizarre at the moment.

The hero who ID the infamous white truck Mike Hults got a car out of this ordeal (how ironic)sjust shy of his 16th B-day . He also got the only standing ovation at Missouri Governor Matt Blunt’s State of the State Address in Jefferson City which I found interesting especially cause during these state addresses, it is tradition that fellow congress people stand up after every point the head of that house says. CLASSIC.

AND NOW ON TO MY TRAVELS.............................

Last Friday, I checked out Eye Candy’s 2006 Pageant (LADIES PICTURED ABOVE) that was held at the newly established club Society (formerly Club Toxic). I got there about 10:30 and of course I got my share of drama at the door, well sort of (I’ll get to that later). So, I get there and I run into my college buddy Brian Stemmons who was doing security out front and I gave him my usual dap and he said to me, ‘man, your website is long, goddamn.” All I could do was shrug my shoulders. All I said was, ‘Well, I just have a lot to say, that’s; all. But it was all good.

So I walk in and showed the lady at the desk my press pass to tell her I was here to take some snaps and she said that it was OK. About the time I was about to get searched, I saw Maranda Witherspoon (who took over the Eye candy pageant from her brother Mo(PICTURED ABOVE IN BEIGE JACKET)) who had the rest of the Eye Candy Models behind her and she said, “We are ready for the red carpet photo shoot.” So I followed them outside. Along with the frigid conditions, the girls (minus Miss July) braved the cold and took shots with the photographers (I took two pics outside then my batteries said UH-UH). Teen rapper Jibbs also came outside to pose with the girls.

After the 10 minute photo shoot, I followed the photographers back into the front area of the club to go inside., When I get inside, the photographers go back in with no problems, But me, well, it was a problem. One of the bouncers told me to stop in my tracks. I told him I was with the media and he said that he didn’t know me (I was having a moment like P Diddy when he wasn’t getting love at the Golden Globe After Party in Hollywood for real). So I stayed there and looked around to see if I saw either MAranda or Mo to get in the club. I saw Mo’s lady and I looked at her to give her the look that I was having trouble getting in. Then I said to her, “Could you tell them who I am?” She looked at my dilemma and told eth bouncer, “He’s OK.” And I got through.

Inside, the crowd was pretty much like of old Toxic—thugs and thugettes and classy folks mixed in the mix. I walked around and saw some people I knew, but the crowd was very young and ready to tear the club up. I was just waiting when an altercation was gettin ready to go down. Anyway, as I made my ways through the crowd 9and the club smoke) , I got my space near the front of the stage for the show to start.

Overall, the show was cool, the girls presentd themselves like ladies. But apparently some of the brothas up in there thought otherwise as they started throwing dollaz down on the girls as they made their way to the stage. Good thing the ladies didnt pick up the money cause that was total dis respect (I admit I got a few of them dollas and put it in my pocket. LOL)

What was also crazy was one of the guys over Society (or is it Plush Part Deux?) kept saying on the mike that this was going to be the last time that people were comin up in the club with caps and sneakers and all that “flea market shit.” Huh? My thing, why have people dressed like that in the first place. If you are going to have a standard, you don’t wait to do it, you do it right at the door.

Jibbs also performed and lip synched parts of his hit, King Kong” before the second segment of the pageant started. It would have been nice if he didn’t lip synch, but I guess him showing up was enough.

Anyway, the winner of the contest was Miss March (Sheena J) who gave the best intelligent answer to the question, “Why Should You Be Chosen as Miss Eye Candy.” She actually said more than one sentence and more than” Cause I look good” or “Cause I am not half naked” like some of them were saying without much thought. Former Ebony Fashion Fair Model Carmen Currie also was in the contest and she was reppin Miss June. They picked three winners and the big winner won 2 grand and a photo shoot with Chingy’s Pink Monkey line.

But I heard there was some controversy going on behind the scenes too. As reported by Delores Shante in Thursday’s Partyline in the St. Louis American, Chingy’s sister rapper Ziggy was a judge and that her and Eye Candy winner Sheena J were close friends(whatever that means) and I heard from a source that an affiliate of the Eye Candy event also was a judge which is definitely a conflict of interest.

Either way, I liked the concept and its good PR for everybody, I just hope that it could withstand the whole stripper vibe that the hip-hop fellas are trying to give it. Afterwards, when I got to my car I found that a lien of cars (including mine) got tickets for parking in an area that you don’t suppose to park at from 11p.m. to 5 a.m. That was great. I didn’t see a sign. I am still debating whether I am going to pay for it or protest it. I guess I got another week to figure it out.

In the house were Jacob from stlonlne,.com, Kelly Wimbley, American’s Bill Beene (who was one of the judges), Jimmelle, Keenan Harris, Evangelina, Basement Beats, Video Vault, Isis Jones, Big Tah, Mocha Latte and Chocolate Tai.

On Saturday, I checked out I AM boutiques monthly party (PICTURED ABOVE ARE SOME OF ITS CLOTHES) at the newly constructed shop located at Delmar and North an South. This is the second event I attended at the event. The first was there grand opening last month (SEE OUT 129)

About 70 or so people came through to listen to the dee-jay sounds of Crucial and Needles and shop and drink free Red Bull and Vodka. It was nice and a change of pace from going to the clubs.

In the house were DJ Anisto, Black Spade, Kevin McCoy, Danielle Fields, Miss Raquel, Eugene Tsimerman, Mocha Lotte (lay off dem Petrons, gal. LOL) , Big Tah, Dana Christian, Treanna, and Jamie Spencer.

After the event was over, I went to my car and several inches of snow was on my car in a matter of two hours. It was definitely a slow riede back to the ‘Nois.

On Monday, rehearsal for the Launch party for JPEK at the Library (SEE MA'AT TIDBITZ below for details) .

CHART-TIDBITZ. Looks like Jibbs is trying to ride up the Billboard charts again as his second single, “King Kong” feat. Chamillionaire, from his CD, “Jibbs feat. Jibbs’ hits the Top 50 of the Billboard R&B /Hip Hop Charts becking at #48. I’ll track this song to see if it can do some dents on the charts like his Top 10 hoit, “Chain Hang Low” Any predictions?

STL-TIDBITZ. Whats up with the Bank Centre in Clayton on Forsyth still having their X-mas tree up?.........East St. Louis native and 2004 American Idol finalist Deandre Perryman just released his first single called “I Love You” that have been getting some spins on FOXYT 95 and Hot 104.1. To hear it go his website
www.myspcae.com/deandreperryman.......... Congrats to Black Rep Producing Director and Founder Ron Himes, who has spent the last three weeks in Knoxville, TN at the University of Tennessee Clarence Brown Theatre directing the Theatre’s first go at mounting an August Wilson production. Himes is directing FENCES, which opens January 25 and runs thru February 11. Joining Himes in Knoxville are Black Rep favorites A.C. Smith, (Troy Maxson), Dennis Lebby (Bono) and Erik Kilpatrick (Gabriel)….Did anyone see the lady lying on the highway on I-55 on Wednesday? I heard that she was lying on the median....Does anyone care that Mississippi Nights closed its doors last week?

MA’AT-TIDBITZ. Things are going smoothly in my stage managing duties of JPEK’s Launch Party that’s going down this Sunday at the 555 Building. We had rehearsals at the Carpenter Branch library this past Monday where me and Jeron Hicks were getting an idea to stage err one who is a part of this show. The rehearsal lasted about five hours and over 30 people are in the cast! It’s going to be a good one. It s going to feature vignettes of JPEK’s stage works as well as feature some of STL’s singers (including MS MV and Hermon Gordon) and a fashion show by Christophe Graffiti designs. I also heard that the team has copped Soul Food/Stomp the Yard actor Darrin Henson to sign autographs there as well................

My meeting with Vaughan Cultural Center director Kim Love about staging my play Monologues and penicillin went OK. He looked at the script and I think he wants to see the actual production first before deicing whether to stage it at VCC.........

My auditions for my fashion show and stageplay have been going well. I am getting many responses from out of towners and I have made some decisions of my final cast as well. I will have a complete list of my cast probably in Mid Feb (for play) and Mid March (for show) ..............

As promised, my fashion show partner Marquita Buchanan sent me some pics of her daughter Mera who she had taken to Sesame Street Live this past weekend at the Scottrade Center(PICTURED ABOVE). Isn’t she adorable?.......

I got a heartfelt testimony from a friend in Los Angeles, Steven Williams who wanted to share with the world about his acts of faith.....

In all my times of believing God the Lord surprised me. Last month I lost one of my business clients he pulled out because of legal obligations and told me that he would not be able to contribute the monthly retainer of $3000.00. This month I was short on rent monies…. plus Winston's Death and funeral cost and court cost to have him cremated, I was not prepared…Praise God that my Church paid for most of Winston’s funeral cost, thank God for Bishop Jones.

Well, I had prayed and praise God and stood on his word and still everything looked bad, but that’s why it’s a faith walk. Well January 5th I phoned my branch to ask them to pay the two lesser checks and to return my rent check. The Branch operations officer said, "okay I got it, we will pay the smaller checks and return your large check for $1850.00." I thanked God after I hung up the phone and stood on his word that he would supply my needs, although he may not come when you need him, Jesus will show up ask Lazarus, even 3 days after.

In my mind I was puzzled and wondered why I was going through this and was my faith being tested. I waited till after 7pm and phoned my Landlord, and I left the message asking for his forgiveness and to give me till next week to pay the rent and additional charges for being late. Saturday, January 6,2007 I went to the bank to deposit $340.00, monies i receieved from the sale of the savage parts of my Benz. When the teller gave me my receipt and told me that my account was overdrawn, I thought that couldn't be factual I should have a positive balance.

I went to my phone and called customer service, what I heard next brought me joy. The Bank had overdrawn my account because they paid my rent check for $1850.00. Wow, I was in awe of God and how he touched the Branch officer to pay my check. It was a miracle…my account has bounced a few checks, I don't have overdraft or any loan accounts.

I’m not a VIP customer, but my Heavenly Father is, in fact he owns the bank. We serve a God who owns the universe and created it. It was Jesus answering my prayer he is never too late, he is always on time and he answers prayer. For we walk by faith and not by site…we must keep the faith at our darkest hours. For God will never leave us nor forsake us, He promised us that.

Be bless and keep hope alive and act on faith.
All the best,

Steven Williams

Keep your head up my brother!

STORMY MONDAY

A Play by Gregory S. Carr

Stormy Monday, set in 1959, tells the story of two African American men who migrate from the South to St. Louis in hopes of obtaining employment with the newly opened Chrysler Plant in Fenton, Missouri. Their arrival in St. Louis interacts with two separate but related forces: the tumultuous Goodman household in which they take residence and the tornado of 1959. The play also looks at the adjustments that these two men must make from living in rural Henderson, Kentucky, to living in the more urban St. Louis metropolitan area.

Student matinee showings are $5 per person. Please call (314) 361-9017 for reservations and more information.
